FLASH MEMORY CARDS

Jade Connections works with flash memory factories with a proven ability and track record in maintaining consistent high quality and volume production scales while at the same time being able to provide extensive configuration options. All standard flash memory card configurations are available, including SD, mini SD, micro SD, MMC Plus, MMC mobile, and CF.

Flash memory cards are classified by card type, capacity, read speed, and write speed. For SD memory cards, care must be taken for 2GB and 4GB capacities, as they are available in two different and potentially incompatible configurations (standard vs. HC). The flash memory configurations described below are for normal stock devices. Read/Write speeds are not specified for these standard devices (all operate with read speeds of at least 30x or better) as the memory used will vary depending upon current market conditions in order to provide the best cost. Customers with specific speed requirements should let us know, and we can provide price quotations for whatever specific speed / controller / flash requirements you may have.

SD / MMC Memory Capacity

There are two different types of SD / MMC memory configurations available – standard and HC (High Capacity). This applies to the standard SD and MMC size form factors as well as the smaller mini SD, micro SD and MMC mobile sizes. Standard SD / MMC memory is available in capacities up to 4GB, with HC memory available from 2GB to 32GB. It is important to note that SDHC and MMC HC memory can only be used in devices designed for use with SDHC or MMC HC. In particular, a 2GB or 4GB SDHC memory card will NOT work in a device designed to only support standard SD. The opposite however is not true. Devices designed to work with SDHC can accept either standard or SDHC memory.

Memory Speed Classifications

The maximum read and write speeds for most memory are different. Read speeds are commonly referenced as a multiple of a standard speed CD-ROM (120X for instance). The standard speed is 0.15 MB/s, so a 120X device is capable of reading at 18 MB/s. Write speeds can also be specified using this notation, however for SDHC, write speeds are typically specified by their speed class ratings as defined by the SD Association. Class 2 devices can write 2MB/s, class 4 at 4MB/s, and class 6 at 6 MB/s.

The flash memory configurations described below are for normal stock devices. Read/Write speeds are not specified for these standard devices (all operate with single/dual channel read speeds of at least 8 MB/s or better) as the memory used will vary depending upon current market conditions in order to provide the best cost solution. Customers with specific speed requirements should let us know, and we can provide price quotations for whatever specific speed / controller / flash requirements you may have.

Memory Speed Classifications

USB Flash Drive speeds are determined by a combination of the USB transfer speed as well as memory speed. All Jade Connections supplied Flash Drives are capable of operating at USB 2.0 High Speed (assuming the host controller/hub can support this speed). All Flash Drives can also operate with the slower USB 2.0 Full Speed, and 1.1 interfaces.

The maximum read and write speeds for most memory are different. In addition, for USB devices read and write speeds are usually different depending upon the mode of access – either Single Channel or Dual Channel (multiple concurrent read/write access mode). All USB Flash Drives have the following minimum capabilities:

Read Speed (Single Channel Mode): 8 MB/s
Write Speed (Single Channel Mode): 2 MB/s
Read Speed (Dual Channel Mode): 12 MB/s
Write Speed (Dual Channel Mode): 4 MB/s

If you have specific speed requirements, Jade Connections will work with you and the factory to produce precisely the type of devices you need. For example, most USB Flash Drives can be built up to the following specifications should there be a need:

Read Speed (Single Channel Mode): 20 MB/s
Write Speed (Single Channel Mode): 9 MB/s
Read Speed (Dual Channel Mode): 33 MB/s
Write Speed (Dual Channel Mode): 20 MB/s
