Solid State Disks (SSDs) and Disk On Module (DOM) are both developing technologies. SSDs designed to be Hard Disk Drive (HDD) replacements are packaged to be plug and installation compatible with traditional HDDs. DOM solutions are very similar to SSD with the exception that physical dimensions are usually not interchangeable with traditional HDD's. Their smaller dimensions make them better solutions for embedded applications as well as notebook computers. Both SSD and DOM have several advantages over traditional HDDs, including being able to withstand extreme shock, vibration, and temperature ranges. Most have lower power consumption and heat dissipation.
